Au Pair Programme Spain

Pocket money, working hours, time off & Co.

Here you find a lot of information about pocket money, working hours, time off and other details concerning your placement as an au pair.

In Spain, there is no official au pair programme. However, EU and EFTA citizens as well as citizens from other specific countries are still entitled to work as au pairs in Spain.

Duties

As an au pair, providing childcare is your main responsibility. Besides, doing light housework is part of your job.

Together with your host family, you need to clarify what your duties as an au pair would exactly be. Please note your arrangement in the au pair contract (also check: Do not forget: contract, insurance & Co.).

Pocket money

In Spain, au pairs receive 50-70 euros per week as pocket money. Board and lodging are free.

Board and lodging

Besides pocket money, you receive free board and lodging. You are entitled to food and accommodation in cases of illness and during your holiday.

Working hours

Au pairs work 30 hours per week. 2 evenings babysitting are included.

Time off

An au pair has one day off per week. This day should fall on a Sunday at least once a month.

Holiday

There are no official regulations concerning the au pair holiday. You need to arrange with your host family, how much holiday you will be entitled to. Our recommendation: an au pair gets four weeks holiday provided that he/she stays in the hosting country for 12 months. Au pairs and host families can take this value as a basis for calculating the amount of holiday in case of shorter placements.

Language course

As an au pair, you should have the possibility to take part in a Spanish language course. Normally, you bear the course cost yourself. It is better if you ask your host family to assist you in finding proper offers within their area.

Termination

The legal period of notice is 14 days. Both the au pair and the host family need this time in order to find a replacement or organise the return trip.
